Admin overview redesign
January 31st, 2009Launched today is the final reorganization of the administrator overview screen for the foreseeable future.
We’ve been tweaking the screen for a few weeks, but have finally nailed a great design everyone will appreciate.
Global Search and Create
First, we’ve removed the static search options on the admin overview. We moved them to a global button accessible from anywhere in the application (in the top-right corner of your screen).
This makes finding what you need much quicker, just like the drop-down menus introduced a week or so ago.
In that same vein, we’ve also made it extremely quick to add any new item with the global Create menu.
Smarter Summaries
Instead of the huge Outstanding Invoices table with a sum at the bottom we’ve given you a summary of how much money you have outstanding. You can click the amount to view all of your outstanding invoices – just like you’re used to seeing.
We’ve also given you informative metrics on your income for the present month, last month, and the year to date. This provides you with relevant information that will help you gauge the health of your business.
You can also click any of the date range labels to view all invoices for that time period.
In that same line of thinking, we’ve provided you an overview of all hours logged within relevant time periods. Of course, you can click these time periods to view all time entries for a date range as well. (today, yesterday, this week, last week, ...) Perfect for approving or reviewing your employee’s timesheet entries at the end of a week!
Buttons
The old overview screen’s buttons were showing their age. We’ve refreshed the button menu to present you with all relevant tasks you might want to accomplish right after logging into Cashboard.
News
Finally, you’ll notice a smart sidebar item that presents you with the latest news stories from our blog. This will keep you up to date on all of the new features and updates we bring you on a constant basis.

I haven’t digested the entire update yet…. This is REALLY useful information.. I’ve been needing this type of view for a while…
2 quick comments, maybe more later:
- On the home/overview… the Timesheet summary for this week shows a different total than you see in TimeSheets/Weekly. Perhaps this is Sunday-Saturday vs Monday-Sunday? I notices the format of the date pop-up changed at some point to show Monday as the first day… perhaps all related?
- I’d REALLY like to see the timesheet summaries with a dollar amount. Every week, I know how many hours I’m working, but I really want to know how much $ I’m going to bill for that work.
Thanks Seth! Very nice update!

@Jeff – good catch on the sunday/monday thing. I’ll get that polished up and live on the server this evening.
I’ll think about the timesheet summary with dollar amounts, but that might get a little expensive (server-time wise).
Glad you like it. Interested to hear more comments when you get a chance to spend some time with it!

Loving the Money In Summary, the “this year” overview is exactly what I needed. Thanks seth, dig it.

Seth-
For the weekly time $ How about displaying this number on the TimeSheets/Weekly (and daily and monthly) pages.
Keeps it off the home page and only calcs in the timesheet view.

@Jeff – I’ll think about it, but really that’s what your “Projected Cost” column on the “Projects to Invoice” table is for.
I’ll consider it, but I’m thinking it might clutter the interface unnecessarily.

Hi Seth,
Congratulations !! Very nice update on the Admin view….In the beginning I was having some troubles to find information in the Admin view…now it’s much more easy and i don’t need to navigate to anywhere else….
Still struggling with the templates syntax….but i’ll get there !!!

Man, it seems like every time I log into Cashboard there’s some new interface update that I have to get readjusted to. Don’t get me wrong, I’m glad you put so much time into this, but it really can be disorientating. Maybe big UI changes should be grouped together and released less frequently.

Hey Seth,
Nice work mate, I love that I can now easily see how I did last month at a glance, and how i compare to that for this month.
Small glitch with the menu at the top right. If I click on create, then click on search, the create menu persists, and the search menu appears above. If I click on the close button it closes both. Perhaps it could close the other menu if it is already there before opening the one just clicked.
